Last week, NIMD signed an agreement with Jordan’s Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs (MoPPA), giving us the go ahead to launch our Jordan School of Politics. The School of Politics This political education and capacity building programme will provide young politicians with the knowledge and skills they need to positively and actively engage in political parties and politics in general. It will target politically active youth who are either members of political parties or other political forms. This week in Jordan, female members from 32 political parties came together to discuss how to expand the role of women in political life. The event, ‘Women in Jordanian Political Parties: Challenges and Future Vision’, was organized by NIMD as part of  EU-JDID, an EU-backed programme seeking to support democratization efforts in Jordan. In December, the NIMD team in Jordan oversaw the latest step in our programme to support the country’s relatively young political party system. The second round of the young political and civic actors trainee programme hosted 25 young political and civic actors from across Jordan for training under the title ‘Participatory Politics & Democratic Principles’. In December, NIMD gathered the secretary generals of political parties from across Jordan for training as part of the EU programme called “The EU Support to Jordanian Democratic Institutions & Development project (EU-JDID)”. The 2-day session, entitled "Election Manifesto Development", offered participants lessons in how to develop distinctive, policy-based manifestos. Manifestos are a crucial tool for political parties as they offer voters a clear indication of the party’s priorities and how it intends to govern. This week, as part of the EU Support to Jordanian Democratic Institutions and Development Project (EU-JDID), NIMD facilitated a consultative meeting on Jordan's National Action Plan for Human Rights (NAP). The meeting was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs (MoPPA) and the Governmental Coordinator for Human Rights, with the participation of representatives of civil society organizations, political parties and party coalitions. As part of the “EU Support to Jordanian Democratic Institutions & Development (EU-JDID)” programme, NIMD is actively working to support a gradual democratic transition in the country. EU-JDID aims to accomplish this through initiatives which support the functions of Jordan's House of Representatives and Independent Electoral Commission, as well as providing assistance to political parties. As part of the EU-JDID project in Jordan, we conducted a training session for approximately 55 young political and civic actors on 26 May. The training, held in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, focused on the topic of women in politics. The participants learned how to support gender mainstreaming in internal political party decision-making processes and structures. This included a teamwork activity, which gave the participants an opportunity to develop their own strategies to break down barriers to women in political parties.
