The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) works to promote peaceful, just and inclusive democracy worldwide. Together with our global network, we work with the entire political ecosystem in a country, from aspiring politicians to political parties to civic leaders, and from the national to the local level. We promote dialogue, strengthen the capacities of political actors, and train young and established leaders in our Democracy Schools. Currently, we run programmes in around twenty countries in Africa, Latin America, Central and Southeast Asia, and the MENA region.

Composition and expertise of the Supervisory Council

The Council currently consists of six members. According to NIMD’s Articles of Association, the Supervisory Council may consist of a minimum of five and a maximum of nine members. On 1 November 2026 and 1 January 2027, two members of the Supervisory Council will step down, in line with the regulations, after serving two terms. At the same time, it has been decided that the Supervisory Council will in principle consist of five members going forward. This creates a vacancy for a member of the Supervisory Council as of 1 November 2026. The current composition of the Supervisory Council can be found here.

Profile

This vacancy is for the profile International Cooperation and Democratisation, and also involves membership of the Remuneration Committee.

The Supervisory Council is specifically looking for candidates with experience in international cooperation and democratisation, who can make a valuable contribution to NIMD’s governance and act as a role-appropriate sparring partner for the Executive Director.

We are particularly seeking candidates with knowledge of democratisation who have (international) practical experience, for example through current or past work at an NGO and/or other international organisations. The new member has a good understanding of how an organisation like NIMD operates within today’s challenging geopolitical and political-societal context, and is therefore able to see the bigger picture and fulfil the role of supervisor effectively.

The new member has experience as a supervisor, or demonstrably has a strong sense of governance. Given the membership of the Remuneration Committee, the new member also has experience in the field of HRM.

In addition, a good command of both Dutch and English, spoken and written, is expected.

Candidates with international experience and/or an international background are explicitly encouraged to apply. Candidates should have the capacity and time in their schedule to fulfil the role properly and be able to attend NIMD’s meetings and other events in person.

Members of the Supervisory Council may not hold a representative position at the level of the Dutch parliament (States General) or the European Parliament, nor a governing position within a political party at national level. Due to existing financial relationships, candidates currently working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the European Commission are also not eligible.

Term of appointment and remuneration

Members of the Supervisory Council are appointed for a term of four years and may serve a maximum of two four-year terms. The Supervisory Council meets five times per year in central The Hague. A remuneration scheme applies to members of the Supervisory Council.

The full Supervisory Council will discuss the complete overview of candidates during its regular meeting on 21 September 2026. Interview rounds with selected candidates will take place in October 2026. For this procedure, the Supervisory Council has formed a Selection Committee consisting of Sven Koopmans (Chair of the Supervisory Council / member of the Remuneration Committee) and Kathleen Ferrier (member of the Supervisory Council). NIMD’s Executive Director, Tijmen Rooseboom, serves as advisor to the Selection Committee. The new member will be appointed by the Supervisory Council, via a written round, as of 1 November 2026. The first Supervisory Council meeting the new member will attend takes place on Monday 7 December 2026, 18.00–20.00, in The Hague.

Lid Raad van Toezicht Profiel Internationale Samenwerking en Democratisering / lid Remuneratiecommissie

Het Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) werkt wereldwijd aan vreedzame, rechtvaardige en inclusieve democratieën. Samen met ons wereldwijde netwerk werken we met het gehele politieke ecosysteem in een land, van aankomende politici tot politieke partijen tot maatschapelijke leiders, en van nationaal tot lokaal niveau. We bevorderen dialoog, versterken de capaciteiten van politieke actoren, en trainen jonge en gevestigde leiders in onze Democracy Schools. Samenstelling en expertise van de Raad van Toezicht

Op dit moment heeft de Raad een omvang van zes leden. Statutair is vastgesteld dat de Raad van Toezicht uit tenminste vijf en maximaal negen leden kan bestaan. Per 1 november 2026 en 1 januari 2027 nemen twee leden van de Raad van Toezicht – na twee termijnen – reglementair afscheid. Tegelijkertijd is besloten om de Raad van Toezicht in beginsel uit vijf leden te laten bestaan. Hierdoor ontstaat per 1 november 2026 een vacature voor een lid van de Raad van Toezicht. Profiel

Het betreft een vacature voor het profiel Internationale Samenwerking en Democratisering en tevens lid van de Remuneratiecommissie.

De Raad van Toezicht zoekt nadrukkelijk kandidaten met ervaring op het gebied van internationale samenwerking en democratisering, die een waardevolle bijdrage leveren aan de governance van NIMD en een rolzuivere sparringpartner zijn voor de Directeur-Bestuurder. Nadrukkelijk wordt gezocht naar kandidaten met kennis op het gebied van democratisering en die beschikken over (internationale) praktijkervaring, bijvoorbeeld door werkzaam te zijn (geweest) bij een NGO en/of andere internationale organisaties.

Het nieuwe lid heeft goed inzicht in de werking van een organisatie als het NIMD binnen de huidige uitdagende geopolitieke en politiek-maatschappelijke context, en is daarmee in staat om de grote lijnen te zien en de rol als toezichthouder waar te maken.

Het nieuwe lid heeft ervaring als toezichthouder dan wel beschikt over een aantoonbaar gevoel voor governance. Gelet op het lidmaatschap van de Remuneratiecommissie heeft het nieuwe lid tevens ervaring op het gebied van HRM.

Aanvullend geldt dat een goede beheersing van zowel de Nederlandse als de Engelse taal in
woord en geschrift wordt verwacht.

Kandidaten met internationale ervaring en/of een internationale achtergrond worden nadrukkelijk uitgenodigd te solliciteren. Kandidaten hebben ruimte in het hoofd en tijd in de agenda om de functie op goede wijze in te vullen en zijn in staat om fysiek aanwezig te zijn bij de vergaderingen van het NIMD en overige bijeenkomsten.

Leden van de Raad van Toezicht kunnen geen vertegenwoordigende functie uitoefenen op het niveau van de Staten-Generaal of het Europese Parlement, of een bestuursfunctie hebben binnen een politieke partij op landelijk niveau. Eveneens kunnen kandidaten vanwege bestaande financiële relaties op dit moment niet werkzaam zijn voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en de Europese Commissie.

Benoemingstermijn en vergoeding

Leden van de Raad van Toezicht worden voor een termijn van vier jaar benoemd en kunnen maximaal twee termijnen van vier jaar lid zijn van de Raad van Toezicht.

De Raad van Toezicht vergadert regulier vijfmaal per jaar in het centrum van Den Haag. Er is een vacatiegeldregeling van toepassing voor de leden van de Raad van Toezicht.

De gespreksronde(s) met geselecteerde kandidaten vinden plaats in oktober 2026.
