NIMD launches Democracy School in Venezuela
14-12-2021

At NIMD, we are committed to promoting the participation of women in politics and peace building around the world, and are always looking for new opportunities to build on and share our knowledge and expertise.

So we are delighted to announce the launch of our Democracy School in Venezuela.

In a country that has experienced prolonged political and economic turmoil and shrinking democratic space, we hope to help equip a new generation of female leaders with the skills to navigate this complicated landscape.

Amplifying Women’s Voices in the Peacebuilding Process

“With our Democracy School, we hope to strengthen the capacities of women so they can become leaders in conflict resolution and transformation processes, always with a gender perspective,” says Mariana Vahlis, Director at NIMD Venezuela.

“We will welcome 40 female leaders from civil society, political movements, and NGOs, so we can work together to ensure women’s voices are heard in the peacebuilding process.”

To promote the inclusion of a diverse group of women from across the country, the course will be hosted online, starting in February 2022 and running for 12 weeks.

The training modules will focus on:

  • Female leadership with a gender perspective
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution
  • The Venezuelan political system
  • The Inter-American System of Women’s Rights

NIMD Venezuela also recently launched a new report – The Participation of Women in Politics in Venezuela – that documents both the obstacles to power and shows the progress made by women in Venezuela.

Through such research, we hope to examine how to strengthen the capacities of Venezuelan women in politics.
