Cost of Elections in Kenya 2026

Ahead of the 2027 elections, NIMD Kenya has released a Cost of Elections report. Kenya’s elections are among the most expensive in the world, costing three times more than the global benchmark of US$5 (Ksh 645) per voter.

To understand what’s driving these costs and look into solutions, the study looked at:

  • Identifying and analysing the components and cost drivers of elections in Kenya
  • Evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of resource allocation and expenditure
  • Providing recommendations for optimising election costs while maintaining integrity and transparency

This research was conducted under the EU-funded Promoting Inclusive Electoral Reforms in Kenya (PIER-K) programme.
