Governance

NIMD’s Supervisory Council and Advisory Council carry out different formal governance duties, as set out in NIMD’s Constitution. At the same time, members of each Council are committed to lending their seniority, expertise and status to NIMD as it executes its work.

Both committees were introduced in 2012, as part of a structural reform.

Supervisory Council

The Supervisory Council is made up of independent professionals, responsible for overseeing NIMD’s activities. Meeting five times per year, the Council provides comprehensive oversight and appoints NIMD’s Executive Director.

Members are selected independently for a fixed term. Their selection is based on a profile system that ensures a balanced mix of experience, and specific managerial and policy skills. The Council operates with a variable membership of four to eight individuals. All members, including the Chair, work independently to maintain objectivity and integrity in their oversight role.

Advisory Council

The Advisory Council provides advice to the Executive Director and the Supervisory Council, both upon request and on its own initiative.

The Council consists of representatives from Dutch political parties. Its members are appointed by the Supervisory Council and the Executive Director. Any political party with a seat in the Dutch Parliament can become a member. This reflects NIMD’s values of inclusiveness and impartiality.

The Council meets at least twice a year to discuss strategic issues and exchange ideas.
