Los partidos políticos, la sociedad civil y los medios de comunicación de Burundi se comprometen a celebrar unas elecciones pacíficas en 2027
Sixty Burundian stakeholders, including political parties, public institutions, religious leaders, civil society and media, have committed to strengthening dialogue and cooperation ahead of the May 2027 presidential election.
The commitments followed a two day workshop held on 22 and 23 July by NIMD Burundi, bringing together 13 public authorities and institutions, 10 elected officials, 5 former dignitaries, 11 political parties, 10 civil society organizations, 4 religious denominations, 3 universities and 4 media outlets. Senior figures at the workshop included former Speaker of the National Assembly Léonce Ngendakumana, former CNDD-FDD president Jérémie Ngendakumana, former Vice President Yves Sahinguvu, and former Speaker of the Senate Emmanuel Sinzohagera.
Individual commitments
Discussions covered institutional accountability, electoral preparedness, social cohesion and conflict prevention. Each stakeholder group left with specific pledges:
- Former dignitaries: contribute to conflict prevention, mediation and reconciliation; coach public officials and political actors toward dialogue and away from behavior that could compromise the credibility of the electoral process
- Members of parliament: strengthen oversight of government action; increase dialogue sessions among political actors to help ensure credible elections at every level
- Public authorities and institutions: guarantee equitable access to the political arena at the local level; enforce the law; organize civic education sessions
- Political parties: prevent conflict; combat hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric during campaigning; promote the inclusion of youth and women in decision making bodies
- Civil society organizations: lead civic and electoral education; carry out objective election monitoring; create inclusive spaces for political debate
- Media outlets: ensure equal airtime for all parties and neutral coverage of candidates; 18 outlets to join a new bimonthly civic debate
- Religious denominations: promote peace, social cohesion and responsible governance; use social media and other platforms responsibly to spread these messages
NIMD Burundi will continue supporting these stakeholders in the lead up to the 2027 election, building on the commitments made in July to help keep the process inclusive, transparent and peaceful.
