Om de Internationale VN Dag tegen corruptie<\/a>spraken we met Susan Batres, directeur van ons kantoor in Guatemala, over hoe we daar werken aan corruptiebestrijding.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Waarom is het belangrijk om corruptie te bestrijden in een land als Guatemala?<\/h3>\n

Guatemala is momenteel het op \u00e9\u00e9n na armste land van Latijns-Amerika en het op zes na armste land ter wereld. Meer dan 70% van de bevolking leeft in armoede of extreme armoede.<\/p>\n

Dit heeft natuurlijk een negatieve impact op het onderwijs en de menselijke ontwikkeling. Zo is slechts 72% van de Guatemalteekse kinderen ingeschreven in het basisonderwijs en lijdt een op de twee kinderen in Guatemala aan ondervoeding.<\/p>\n

De structurele oorzaak van deze problemen is gekoppeld aan de hoge mate van corruptie in Guatemala.<\/p>\n

De staat wordt vaak gebruikt als middel om op illegale wijze rijkdom te vergaren, wat ten koste gaat van de financi\u00eble middelen van de Guatemalteekse bevolking. Hierdoor hebben veel mensen geen toegang tot mensenrechten en de basisdiensten die nodig zijn voor een fatsoenlijk leven.<\/p>\n

Wat doet NIMD om corruptie in Guatemala te bestrijden?<\/h3>\n

NIMD Guatemala biedt ondersteuning aan vrijwilligersgroepen die bestaan uit de \"Burgercomit\u00e9s voor Transparantie en Integriteit\". We ondersteunen deze groepen in het hele land en bouwen hun capaciteiten en vaardigheden op. Op deze manier helpen we hen hun recht op toegang tot informatie te waarborgen. Hiermee kunnen ze sociale audits uitvoeren om het gebruik van publieke middelen en de kwaliteit van projecten van de lokale overheid te controleren.<\/p>\n

We bieden deze groepen ook praktische ondersteuning, zodat ze hun werk kunnen doen zonder hun veiligheid in gevaar te brengen.<\/p>\n

Wat zijn uw toekomstige plannen en initiatieven tegen corruptie?<\/h3>\n

In de komende vier jaar zullen we ook doorgaan met het geven van politieke training aan jongeren, zowel uit het maatschappelijk middenveld als van politieke partijen. Deze training is gericht op jongeren met leiderschapsvaardigheden die ge\u00efnteresseerd zijn in deelname aan de politiek.<\/p>\n

Het lesprogramma behandelt democratie, de staat, politieke systemen, kiesstelsels en politieke partijen, democratische waarden, transparantie, verantwoordingsplicht en toegang tot de publieke opinie.<\/p>\n

Daarnaast zullen we dialogen plannen over de noodzaak om overheidsgelden op een meer toegewijde manier te gebruiken.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
