Deze week ging de VS naar de stembus in een van de meest felbevochten en verdeeldheid zaaiende midterm campagnes in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Hoewel de resultaten waren zoals de meeste analisten hadden voorspeld, met de Republikeinen die de Senaat behouden en het Huis opgeven, waren andere resultaten minder verwacht. Velen zien 2018 als het tweede 'Jaar van de Vrouw' (het eerste was in 1992, toen de vrouwelijke vertegenwoordiging bijna verdubbelde), omdat een groot aantal vrouwelijke kandidaten de overwinning behaalde.<\/p>\n

Gendergelijkheid in politieke vertegenwoordiging en rechten is essentieel als we een einde willen maken aan de historische onrechtvaardigheden waaronder de helft van de wereldbevolking lijdt. Niet alleen dat, het zal onze economie\u00ebn productiever maken, onze gezondheid verbeteren en onze regeringen meer verantwoordelijk maken. Met gendergelijkheid in vertegenwoordiging kunnen we een politiek, een bedrijfsleven en een samenleving opbouwen die in de behoeften van ons allemaal voorziet.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Wij als organisatie zijn vastbesloten om deel uit te maken van het realiseren van die verandering en we kijken ernaar uit dat de nieuwe vrouwelijke vertegenwoordigers de VS helpen om een meer gelijkwaardige samenleving te worden. Opmerkelijke vrouwen van allerlei achtergronden hebben het tot het Congres geschopt, een prestatie die de Amerikaanse democratie zeker zal openstellen voor de behoeften van vrouwen en meisjes in het hele land.<\/p>\n

Maar is ons enthousiasme terecht?<\/p>\n

Laten we deze twee jaren met elkaar vergelijken om te zien wat er veranderd is. In het eerste Jaar van de Vrouw, Het centrum voor Amerikaanse vrouwen en politiek<\/a> meldt dat het aantal vrouwen steeg van 32 in beide huizen (22D, 10R) naar 54 (40D, 14R). Op dat moment was de loonkloof tussen mannen en vrouwen in de VS 71,5% volgens de Nationaal Comit\u00e9 voor gelijke beloning<\/a>. Bij de stemming van dit jaar zijn 119 vrouwen gekozen (100D, 19R), van een totaal van 107 (78D, 29R) de vorige keer. Het National Committee on Pay Equity meldde dat de loonkloof tussen mannen en vrouwen in 2017 80,5% was. Vergeet niet dat de Equal Pay Act in 1963 werd ondertekend en dat de eerste vrouwelijke politicus in 1916 in het Congres werd gekozen. Het lijkt erop dat de vooruitgang in het beste geval traag verloopt.<\/p>\n

Giet dit koud water op onze felicitaties voor de nieuwe gezichten in het Congres? Helemaal niet. Want elke overwinning in de zoektocht naar gendergelijkheid inspireert anderen om de strijd voort te zetten. Vrouwelijke politieke vertegenwoordigers zijn momenteel in de minderheid, maar we zien het tij keren. Ondanks de barri\u00e8res die tegen hen zijn opgeworpen, slagen vrouwen, niet alleen in de VS maar overal ter wereld.<\/p>\n

Vandaag de dag kijken vrouwen tegen het glazen plafond op met een hamer in hun handen; en ze slaan er uit alle macht mee.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
