NIMD concerned about developments in Mali
NIMD condemns the apparent military take-over of the Malian government and the removal of President Touré as head of state this morning (22 March 2012). NIMD severely regrets this clear setback to the democratic process of the country and supports the call for a democratic transition based on the wish of the people. The scheduled elections for a new president are only a month away.
NIMD acknowledges the dire situation Mali has been facing in recent months with the intensified Tuareg rebellion and Al Qaida linked destabilisation activities in the north of the country, and calls for a peaceful dialogue process and international and regional cooperation to solve this conflict.
Under these circumstances, NIMD calls on the military leaders responsible for the mutiny to comply with the demands of the UN Security Council, to return to their barracks, to restore constitutional rule and to allow the democratically elected government of President Amadou Toumani Touré to continue its work.
Political parties were already in full swing to prepare for the upcoming elections, wishing for their different candidates to succeed President Touré in a democratic process and through a free and fair vote on 29 April 2012.
NIMD works with the Malian political parties through an interparty dialogue platform, promoting cooperation and actively supporting the national democratisation process.
