President European Parliament welcomes Multiparty Taskforce on Gender
The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz welcomed the first meeting of the Multiparty Taskforce on Gender which took place 2-3 July in Batumi, Georgia. The seven partner political parties of NIMD Georgia discussed ways to increase the participation of women in politics. From all OSCE countries, Georgian women are the least represented in their national parliament (6.6%). The key to gender equality lies with political parties by encouraging women to pursue political office and by including women on party lists.
Martin Schulz stressed that “in Georgia gender-balance in politics is an issue that desperately needs more attention.” He added, “The upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia will be extremely important; they will provide an opportunity for Georgians to not only be more gender-inclusive in politics but to demonstrate the maturity of their democracy and to continue on the path of ambitious reforms. It is essential, therefore, for all political parties to demonstrate their dedication to the goal of European integration by ensuring that the electoral process conforms fully to what we expect of our democratic partners.”
The Multiparty Taskforce issued a communiqué in which the seven political parties committed themselves to measures to increase women participation in politics.
